dedicating yourself to write comic books is very seriously nerdy decision.

at some point you actually cross a threshold accepting that you are a dork.  but you're so in love with it, that it doesn't matter.  I think that's when you know that this is what you should be doing with your life.  When you don't give a shit what people think and you're actually excited at thought of it.

and working with an artist that takes what you think up in your head and shows you something that makes your vision turn into some tiny crayon drawing with stick figures is one of the best feelings on earth.  as a writer i feel really in control of my world and my characters, but working with a good artist makes you realize how much detail you're really missing in that world.  Seeing it world develop and come to life is an amazing feeling.

ok that's enough.

cause i just do it now.

another great night of writing.  Issue 10 is almost done.

trying to get feedback from anyone and everyone on how to contact publishers to setup meetings at NYCC so I can pitch my project.  So far, not so good.  But I have hope.  This story is too good to never see the light of day.  ramble ramble.

i got my pass for NYCC in the mail today.  i'm really excited.  i also found an interview i did with shannon wheeler 11 years ago.  funny shit.  i used to interview people all the time back in the day.  Mike Patton, King Buzzo.. the Melvins.  I had a great time doing it.  Record labels used to send me cds and free concert tickets to write reviews.  I have no idea how I got so lucky back then.  anyway..  this is what was at the end of my interview.. a little blurb about myself.  it cracked me up, so i'm putting it here.  so i can read it, because, lets face it.

no one else read this shit.

Charlton Sect – (king of the run-on sentence) thanks you whole-heartedly for reading the terrible crap he scribbles on the back of K-Mart deli napkins despite the fact that his head was tragically disfigured in a skiing accident at the 1996 Winter Olympics.  Though he failed to bring home a medal that year, the surgeons / cashiers at Murphy County Hospital / BBQ Beef Pit would like to you know that Charlton is now able to hear fear and smell the horrific screams of passers-by.  At least the bag fits nicely…

k g'night.  xo

Something must be wrong.

Good shit keeps happening.  I hope I didn't just jinx it, or does mentioning that may have just jinxed it, unjinx it?  shit.. did i just re-jinx it?

I received the panel layout and rough sketches of the first six pages of my first issue of Interface.  The plan is (once they're finished) to get them colored and lettered and start sending them to publishers with my script and synopsis.  Maybe it's naive to think that this book will go somewhere.  I'm a big NOBODY, but I have a surprising amount of faith in these scripts.. this story.  It continues to surprise me and I love writing it.  Amazing, really.  Getting the first art (besides the character sketches) is a big deal.  I can see it all unfolding and I feel confident that I'm telling the story well.  It looks great.

In addition, I just got hired to script a story for a video game for iPhone/Android.  I'm completely ecstatic.  It could wind up being nothing at all, but I like that I'm getting paid for this.  I love video games and the timeline/theme is right up my alley.  Think 30's Sci fi with some comedy and fun stuff thrown in.  I had a blast brainstorming ideas last night.

Things keep looking up and I keep looking up to make sure there's not a safe or a piano dangling above my head.

I watch too many cartoons.

Got stopped for speeding today and got a warning.  first time that's ever happened to me.  Probably only a week left before my house gets struck by a meteor.

Exponentially Comic Brained.

I finished rewrites on Issue #9 of Interface last night.  Extreme pleasure and euphoria.  Love the ending.

So.. INTERFACE is the comic book I'm writing.  It's about an early 30's IT Tech named Alex who hates his job, hates his life, etc.  It takes place in the fictional location of Sky City (think Devner meets New York City).  When Alex was 8, his father was killed in front of him.. an innocent bystander in a hero/villain battle in downtown Sky City.  Yes, this is a super hero book.  In an accident at his job, Alex receives the ability to communicate with any electronic device.  There are tons of great stuff in this.  Evil villains, government conspiracies, great heroes and not so great heroes.  And a main character that despite his best efforts, seems to only get in his own way and finds himself going down a very dark path.

When I started this project, I thought it would be a cool insight into a character who really doesn't have much in the way of super powers.  No super strength or flight or razor sharp claws.  And how someone like that may struggle to find his place in a world dominated by more powerful heroes.  However, the evolution of the characters in this story has led me to places I've never imagined.  Of course I don't want to spoil anything here in the hopes that I can one day get this bastard published, but I'll just say that it's more than I could have hoped for.

True love for the characters (good and evil), and there's nothing more satisfying than surprising myself with interconnecting plot lines, histories and associations.

Back to Issue #10 today.  Although I found myself day dreaming about a story idea I have for an alternate take on the origin of Wonder Woman.  God knows I'd love the chance to write it for DC/Elseworlds.  I was never a big WW fan.  I'm surprised by a lot of what I read today.  The character could have a lot more going on than what I've read in the past.  Maybe the new WW book this week will turn me around on her.  Until then, I'll keep jotting notes on my own version.

Til next times.  xo

i came, i blogged, i kicked its ass.

Hi there - I'm a part time writer (that means i do it for free with all my spare time) and a full time IT Admin (that's where the money comes from).  I'm using this blatantly to promote my dream of writing comic books professionally.  I've been writing most of my life, (I won my first award in 2nd grade), and I'm a firm believer in the over use of parentheses.  So on the advice of a publisher, I'm "putting myself out there" in the hopes of generating interest, followers... that sort of thing.  Hit the Cincinnati Comic Con today.  Heading to New York City in October.

This is the first of many.  Stay tuned for tales of high adventure and occasional disappointment.  Oh, and some actual details on the stories I'm working on.
