So... Christmas.

Yeah, mine was pretty much a nightmare.

BUT... After a catastrophe of a week, something good finally happened.

I completed the first issue of my new series, "Things Behind The Sun".  I've been uninspired and feeling like uber-shit for the last week, but for whatever reason, I attacked it today.  I had the intro written already, but that's still 17 pages written and research all today.  And I guess I feel like the first issue is the hardest and it gets a little easier to keep it rolling after that.

Sure, I have editing and some re-writes.  Basic clean up.  But that's the easy part. (usually)

Anyway.. it's a small victory in what has been a really hard time for me, so I guess I'm a little extra excited.

I don't have much else to say.  I have a couple of things in the works for MyComicBlog.com that I'm excited about.  Still working out some bugs on my book of short stories in addition to ironing out the details on my LLC and Website.

I'll get there.  It's all about the creation today.

Thanks for listening and I hope your Christmas was less shitty than mine.  It was.  Trust me.

One Moment, For Favor...

You probably didn't know I was good at Spanish.  Si.  Ees Troo.

Anyway.  Getting through the holidays.  Busy, busy, busy.  Too much personal shit to do lately.

I got a little side tracked on the new writing project I'm working on with another new book idea.  A book of short stories.  I've always had a thing for short stories.  My favorite books growing up were Stephen King's short story collections.. specifically Skeleton Crew.  I always love to check out the compilation comics that come out around Halloween, like the Vertigo title I reviewed earlier this year.  That's what I'm aiming for.  Seems like an excellent opportunity to collaborate with new writers and artists.  Can't wait to see where it goes.

In the meantime, I've been dealing with the ins and outs of starting this business of mine in a more legitimate way.  It's a little less thrilling than I had hoped.  Something about paperwork is such a turn off.  Regardless.. I've been doing my homework and acquiring information from various sources on registering an LLC, and all the fun behind the scenes stuff.  Thanks to Eric at Broken Icon for the helpful hints and tips.  Very mucho appreciado.  (again, my spanish is excellente)

A couple more colored pages have come in for Interface and I've signed off on the inking of the last few pages of the first issue.  Colors, Letters and Printing await.  So close now.

One of my other discussion points, was waiting on selling that first issue until I have a clear idea of when Issue #2 will be ready to sell.  Makes great sense.  I guess I just get a little impatient (ok, a lot).  So hopefully I can hold out that long.  Still, it's an exciting ride. Trying to pull some logo stuff together for the cover.  Had an awesome idea for the Assailant Comics logo, but I have to keep it a secret for now.  Dammit - I hate that!

Completed a couple new reviews for MyComicBlog.com - Animal Man #4 (one of the best books of the year) and All Fall Down, an indie book from Arcana.  Be sure and check them out!

I'll update any good news I have, but if there's none or I'm feeling lazy (lets face it  I will be lazy), have a happy holiday to the four people who read this blog. Literally.

Thanks!  Mucho Respecto!

Cover Artists

When I was a singer, I never wanted to be associated with cover artists.  Sweet irony.. the tables have turned.

I'm working with Erick Marquez and my current pencil artist, Rowel to generate some ideas for the cover of issue #1 of Interface.  I had Erick do my first piece of artwork for the book earlier this year, but after completing the story, it feels more appropriate for Issue #6, so I'm saving it for that book.

In addition, I have received my first pieces of colored art from Anthonie and it looks great.  My job now is to decide which tone best suits the flashback/dream sequences.  I'm leaning toward desaturated sepia or desat-white.  I'm afraid the sepia still has too much color and I'd like to use that visual cue to indicate the dream/flashback, which happen at least once an issue through the first few issues as more about Alex, his father, his mother and two of the other major characters is revealed.

This is the opening page of issue #1, showing little Alex and his dad, John.

And guess what else?  I have a new review up on MyComicBlog.com about the new Raphel comic for TMNT.  Yes, they still make Ninja Turtle comics!  In fact, IDW has made a career out of publishing old 80's retro do-overs like GI Joe, Transformers and Thundercats.  So check it out!  Also, there's a new addition to the comic blog group named Shiah and he's writing some pretty interesting articles.  Go take a look!

As usual, thanks for taking the time to read this and feel free to comment or ask questions!  xoxo

Everything is new again.

I love this time.  Writing a new story.  Brainstorming ideas.  The excitement when something that wasn't quite right just "clicks".  A new piece falls right into place and pulls everything together.  This story is very new and there are still a lot of those moments that need to happen.  I have some great things moving for the first issue.  Bad ass intro.  Character profiles coming together.

It wasn't long ago that I went through this same process with Interface.  That was my first book and I just winged it as I went.  It's great to have pushed through that.  I know much more about what I'm doing and how to get what I want out of myself.  Everything is new again.

I never really imagined I'd like the business end of putting everything together.  I always just wanted to be the creative guy.  (I still do I guess - it's less pressure)  But as I've mentioned before, each new step of the process provides additional insight and a small sense of accomplishment.  I would love it if someone liked my work enough to want to publish it or throw money at it.  But I like doing it on my own (so far) and having the final word.  Being my own boss to an extent.  (Though I could never be my own editor)  It's also extremely frustrating to have knocked out 12 issues of a book over 6 months, and have to wait and spend a ton of money (I don't really have) to put them together myself.  Double edged blah blah.

Now websites.  All of the necessary business things.  I just wanted to write a story.  And starting a new story is exactly where I want to be.  I'm picturing Assailant Comics featuring my own creator-owned books and (who knows maybe) some other great books by other writers/artists.  I know.  Daydreaming.

There's no reason it can't happen.  That's the way I like it.

Inked pages of Interface #1 are off to the colorist - Anthonie Wilson.  Really looking forward to seeing the work.  Pushing around cover ideas in my brain too.  Can't wait to have this first issue under my belt.

Jesus, do I repeat myself too much?

I face forward.  I don't look back.

Lost In My Mind, by The Head and The Heart... it's my theme song today.  and i like that.

Happy Birthday - AssailantComics.com

The internet gave birth today.  I purchased the domain for my publishing company (which I'm currently in the process of building).  ASSAILANTCOMICS.COM   I'm pretty excited at this small, but cool step in the evolution of me getting Interface (and hopefully additional books) published under my own funding and watchful eye.

In addition, I have the first twelve pages of Interface #1 inked and ready to be colored.  The last 10 pages will be in the works soon and then I'm a cover and a couple of logos away from printing.  And THAT is very exciting.

Special thanks to JayDee Rosario at Unstoppable Comics (again) for picking me up off my ass and pointing me in the right direction.  Tyler James at Comix Tribe for being an especially nice self-publisher who continues to be a helpful resource despite my somewhat shitty review of his book The Red Ten.  Also Dan Rovito at MyComicBlog.com for letting me spill my opinions out to the interwebs and retweeting my tweets for this blog.  Speaking of MyComicBlog:

New Review:  RED MOON

Now I need a finished product to sell on my website.  Oh and a website to sell my finished product on.  This is a lot of business.  I hope I get a raise so I can afford it.

Got some great notes on my new story, which I'm tentatively titling "Things Behind The Sun".  Very exciting times.  Thanks for reading and/or caring enough to stop by and see wtf this blog is all about.
